The Energy using Products (EuP) directive for electric motors (EC640/2009) sets strict new requirements for energy efficiency in industrial applications. The directive is relevant for nearly all electric motors in the power range of 0.75 kW to 375 kW, and introduces a new mandatory scale for their efficiency. This scale starts with IE1 as the lowest and current efficiency standard and has IE3 as the highest.

The directive came into effect in mid-2011 and will gradually increase efficiency requirements in a 3-stage process.

2011

All motors must meet the IE2 high efficiency standard and all motors below this will be prohibited.

2015

All 7.5 kW to 375 kW motors must meet the IE3 standard or meet the IE2 standard and be equipped with a variable frequency drive (VFD).

2017

In the last stage of the directive all 0.75 kW to 375 kW norm motors must meet the IE3 standard – or meet the IE2 standard and be equipped with a variable frequency drive (VFD).

To meet these requirements, we have a number of solutions to assist customers in both the starting and control requirements for motors in their applications, whether it be making existing equipment meet the new requirements or a new project to ensure compliance.

VFD’s (or commonly known also as variable speed drives) are now common place and there are a number of variants. Quite often a VFD is vastly overcomplicated in its functionality for what is perceived to be a simple function (eg a simple pump control with varying of speed against pressure or level) and so we utilise the Eaton Variable speed starter for such applications, giving simple control over smartwire DT and a very low cost of ownership compared with a conventional VFD

We also utilise VFD’s from a number of manufacturers where required or specified including Control Techniques, ABB, Siemens and Schneider to name but a few.
